Board of Trustees Agree on the Future of the Delt House!

Gamma Mu Tau (GMT), the house corporation for the Kettering University Delts, hosted a town hall meeting December 14th to discuss the future of the Delt house. There was active dialogue about various options including remodeling, building new at a new location, building new at the current location, and even partnering with the university with their “Greek Village” concept. Some of the comments expressed included:

  • “Remodel is a good option – good location.  Cost of new could be double/triple”
  • “Like the remodel option. Bring in an architect, could really make major changes.”
  • “Rates are low – Good time to get a mortgage”
  • “Undergrads tend to prefer remodel. New probably would take too long for current members to benefit”
  • For alumni, there is a sense of nostalgia that would be lost if we built new”
  • “Remodel does limit our flexibility related to some items (for example, size of bathrooms)”
  • “Current location is perfect”

A number of active chapter members were present along with alumni from past years. Somewhat surprisingly, the active members didn’t seem to mind the current smaller bathrooms, and were OK with the inconvenience of potentially remodeling while school was in session.

Based on this feedback and the opinion of the GMT Board of Trustees, the Board subsequently agreed on the remodel option as the official direction for the future of the Delt house. This enables GMT to start immediately on some needed improvements where architectural services are not needed.

In addition, an architect has been selected to start preliminary planning and generate some conceptual drawings. Alumni assistance is needed to work with the architect to ensure a plan that meets and exceeds expectations. If interested in helping in any way, see the Contact Us page on the KU Delts website.

One of the ideas discussed was replacing the fireplace with accordion-style doors to blur the lines between indoors and outdoors while entertaining.

Though a bit late, getting this communication has made my day and brings back memories. As a former “house and grounds” chair, I think it was called, I kind of remember how things were, 50 years ago! (class of 1970)

And being in construction since then might bring a few ideas. Check us out at BRTW.com. Best to all.
